Dental Phobia & Anxiety
Dental phobics are some of my favourite patients.
I have met many and have directed a large part of my practice to caring for those who, for whatever reason, have developed anxiety or even a phobia surrounding dentists and dental treatment.
I am one of only four dentists in Wales certified by the official UK Dental Phobia regulator. Visit their website to see if you may be classified as a phobic and might benefit from our services.
There are several ways for us to help you as an anxious or phobic patient:
1 - General Anaesthetic - I am fortunate to work alongside a team of anaesthetists, doctors trained in putting patients to sleep so they can have dental treatment carried out without any consciousness.
2 - Intravenous sedation - Our anaesthetist team can also provide sedation. This involves passing a medicine through your circulation to make you very calm and relaxed. You would be awake and conscious, but there is often very little memory of what took place during your treatment.
3 - Inhalation sedation - Our anaesthetist team can also provide this very low level of ‘gas and air’ sedation to make you more calm and relaxed. You are be awake and more conscious, and in full control to make sure we keep you comfortable at all times during your treatment.
4 - Oral sedation - If medically appropriate, you may be prescribed a low level sedative to make you calm and possibly a little sleepy. This form of sedation can be very good for those who may get nervous on the day of a larger dental treatment.
5 - Acclimation - This is my goal for every anxious patient and I have been thankful that this has worked in many cases. Here, we get to know one another. Spend some time getting used to the clinic and explaining how and why everything in our surgery has been designed to make you comfortable and not to feel pain. I have had many patients expect to have general anaesthetic, only to end up coming to see me every week and gradually build their confidence to become happy, reassured, regular patients.
I aim to produce beautiful results for my patients. For a portfolio of my work, please visit my instagram.
