Denture Makeovers

We as dentists are not in the business of taking out teeth if it can be avoided.

In some cases however, tooth loss in inevitable and removable dentures can be made to restore form and function.

There are several classifications of dentures:

1 - Immediate dentures - a denture designed to be fitted on the same day that your teeth are extracted so you are never left with a gap. These will loosen in their fit over 6-12 months as the gums heal around the site of the missing teeth and new dentures are often required, these are called:

2 - Conventional dentures - a denture designed to fit the shape of your mouth in the long term. All other dental treatment must be completed before this stage including; fillings, root canal treatments, extractions (more than a year prior), crowns and gum health treatments. These can be made from:

  1. Acrylic - a high impact plastic type material which is often pink in colour and will cover the roof of the mouth for upper dentures

  2. Metal (Cobalt-Chromium) - the gold standard. A cast, lightweight metal denture base which covers far less of the roof of the mouth and allows better taste of food and drink, alongside superior fit and comfort.

The photos below highlight some of my cases. For a larger portfolio of my work, please visit my instagram.

Pro-(ae)sthetic

Here is a wonderful case of a kind lady was suffering from missing teeth, gum disease and considerable tooth decay.

After years of suffering from dental phobia, this mouth has been transformed by upper and lower dentures alongside regular hygiene visits.

Denture makeover

Another case of an individual suffering from chronic gum disease, leading to all of the lower front four teeth becoming very wobbly. She opted for a denture to transform the appearance of the lower teeth and this immediate denture was ready in 10 days.

A premium option…

A novel option for the best possible denture retention is a ‘telescopic denture’, a custom made precision attachment denture fabricated from the cobalt and chromium alloys but which sit on top of some existing healthy teeth. The result is a denture which does not cover so much of the roof of the mouth and fit much more securely than any other type of denture.

These dentures can only be made subject to assessment and not all patients are a good candidate for this denture design. The diagram opposite indicates the design process.

These dentures offer the most superior fit and function of all dentures. They are very secure, do not drop out and can offer the most enduring fit and form for years to come.
